This youth pastor in California is committed to reaching the youth in his area, and is using a BattleCry event to do it.
David Chiolero heard the BattleCry message and knew that it was time to get his youth involved. He has launched an aggressive plan to mobilize his youth group by offering 200 free tickets to the San Francisco BattleCry Stadium Event. But this youth pastor has his eyes on an even more important goal: Doubling the size of the youth ministry by Easter.
Since last summer, while examining and praying over the youth ministry landscape in his area, David has realized more and more that the focus of his youth group needs to be evangelism. With only 4% of the total population in the Bay Area attending an evangelical church, the need to reach out is great. And David saw the BattleCry Stadium Event as an incredible opportunity to do just that.
Hearing Ron Luce speak about the BattleCry could not have happened at a better time. It was at a youth pastor's lunch during an evangelism conference that David was able to hear about the BattleCry Campaign, and more specifically, the Stadium Event in SBC Park, San Francisco. Afterwards, he put together a campaign of his own to mobilize, equip, and fire up his youth group to reach out to their peers.
Here's the plan: Anyone in his youth group (or from any other youth group in the area, for that matter) can sign up to come to the event. But for every friend they invite, they get 25% off their ticket. That means that if one teen invites four friends, they go for free!
David's plan is to use this simple offer to give teens a big reason to bring friends to the event. He's been playing commercials (BattleCry videos) during meetings for weeks, and he will soon host a kick-off party to launch the campaign — in an all-out military theme, of course. His church has caught the vision and is paying for the free tickets.
After the event, David has even set up meetings and small groups to bring new believers into the church and begin the discipleship process, all of which will help meet their goal of doubling the size of the youth group.
"Ron often refers to these events as a 'break from reality.' They really are, and we are praying that God will use this one to set people free and get people saved," David said in a recent interview.
When asked about what advice he would offer other youth pastors, David said, "Every one of us can agree on evangelism. So if you agree on that, the BattleCry is a great opportunity. It's all laid out there for you. For very busy youth pastors, it's so helpful to be able to jump on board with something where a lot of the work has already been done. That's one thing I love about Teen Mania. It's high quality, it is't just advertising some conference, and all the tools really help people make this work."
David Chiolero is the youth pastor at Harbor Light Church in Fremont, CA.
